Welcome!

Dear Parents and Students of Room 10,

Welcome to Third Grade! I am so glad to have you joining me this fall. I will use this blog to give regular updates (about twice a week -more or less) about class activities and upcoming events. For the sake of privacy, I won't be posting names nor pictures of any students.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Buck

Market math is coming!

This is a parent/child even on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.  It is an open house 4:30-7:30 at Roche Bros. Supermarket of Acton (387 Mass Ave)  A wonderful way to spend time with your child and it is great for their math skills!  I hope you all can attend with your child, all activities take about 1 hour to complete.

Enjoy!

Good Morning!

We have been busy working on our multiplication facts here in room 10.  I wanted to remind you that your child should be studying their facts nightly.  This week's math facts quiz the students are responsible for knowing 0-4.

Also, if you need extra paper for the biography paragraphs please let me know, I would be happy to send home any.  Remember the written project is due February 5th.

Just a reminder that the weather is quite cold now and the kids go out to recess as much as we can get them outside.  This means you need to send you child to school with the appropriate outdoor clothing: winter coat, hat, gloves or mittens, snow pants and boots.  Please make sure these items have a name written on them...image a closet with all of these supplies for 24 students!  Also, the students do NOT wear boots in the classroom for safety reasons so they need to have a pair of shoes at school each day as well.  Thank you!
We have been busy in room 10!

We have enjoyed two dance sessions focusing on artists and movement.  This is a wonderful way to expand on our biography unit and to think about art in different ways.  We have one more dance session remaining, next Wednesday.  The kids have really enjoyed this program!

Continuing with our biography unit we have read books about Thomas Edison, Helen Keller and Louis Braille along with learning about famous people of the Revolutionary War such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.  The kids really love to learn about other people's lives.

Part two of the biography project went home yesterday.  After conferencing with each student yesterday about their organizers the students now take the organizer to a first daft form and then to a final draft in cursive.  During our next few art times the students will be working on portraits of their famous person as well.  All of these pieces will come together in a great final product which will be displayed outside our room on the bulletin board.  Come take a look mid February when they make their debut!

The math facts the students are responsible for next week are 0,1,2,3.  Keep practicing math facts with your children every night so that they are comfortable with them and know them all!

I hope you all had a wonderful, healthy and restful vacation!

I wanted to take a moment to thank all of the families that contributed to my holiday gift cards and those who sent individual gifts as well.  Thank you for thinking about me during the holiday season, I truly appreciate it!

Next week (our first full week back) will be the first week of multiplication timed fact quizzes on Fridays.  This week we will be testing on the 0 and 1 facts.  As usual the quiz will be 2 minutes and 25 questions.  Please help you children study their math facts nightly so they are prepared for the quizzes.  I will be posting weekly the facts that need to be worked on for the week so be sure to check back in!

We will begin our study of the Revolutionary War this week.  This is such a fantastic unit!  I try to express to the students how lucky they are to live right here where it all happened.  We do not take a field trip to Concord or Lexington but this is such an opportunity for you family to take a visit to some of these famous places, and your children may even be able to teach you a few things!  I encourage you to share this experience and go and visit Lexington and Concord this year.

Happy New Year!

Dear Parents,

It is time to congratulate your child!  We have finished our cursive program and your child should know all of the capital and lowercase letters in cursive.  From this point on ALL work will be completed in cursive EXCEPT spelling tests.  This does include homework and long term projects.  (excluding the Massachusetts Map that was already assigned)

Thank you,
Mrs. Buck

The Conant PTO was kind enough to schedule us an assembly this past Friday.  I was so impressed with this man and his message.  Please ask your kids to share with you what they thought of "Hero Art".  Please check out his website http://www.amazingheroart.com/ he was inspiring and so talented.  Enjoy!
